At Fresh-Agro, in the Netherlands, the onion import season started a while ago. That was for Egyptian yellow onions. Now, in mid-May, red onions from Egypt will be added to this. "The cultivation in Egypt is going well," says Morad Fawzy.
"The weather conditions were perfect, and there were fewer diseases than last year. Egyptian red onions are known for being firm, sweet, and a little spicy. We can continue supplying red onions to our clients until the beginning of August. We have all the sizes, from 40 to 100+ available."
"Our onions can be sorted by hand or machine. We have been importing Egyptian onions for several years now. We have, therefore, noticed that professionalization is slowly on the rise in Egypt too," remarks Morad.
"Our growers, colleagues, and seasonal workers in the fields realize the importance of supplying a high-quality product. There is not much you can do about the weather. You can, however, do something about the other factors. These are, for example, harvesting the crop at the right moment. Then it needs to be stored dry and sorted."
Fresh-Agro keeps a close eye on these factors. They regularly travel to Egypt to inspect the fields and the product. They also speak to and educate the farmers and laborers. "Ultimately, we want to ensure that we will be able to deliver a high-quality to our clients," Morad concludes.
