The melon campaign in the northern hemisphere is currently gaining momentum. In Spain, Sicily and Morocco, people are already harvesting diligently and in the other growing areas the season is ready to kick off. "We expect the first Turkish melons of the Kirkagac variety no later than the beginning of next week," said the Ahmet Yilmaz, owner of Mim wholesale in Cologne.
Kirkagac melons from Turkey will arrive in Cologne shortly
Currently, the experienced tropical fruit trader is primarily concerned with watermelons from Morocco and Iran. "Moroccan products tend to be more popular with customers because of their better quality, especially with the difficult import requirements and long transport distances for Iranian melons," says Yilmaz.
Watermelons are currently come in primarily from Morocco and Iran.
"Kirkagac particularly popular"
Overall, demand is slightly lower than usual at this time of year. This is because the temperatures are lower than usual as well. The specialized traders are therefore hoping for higher temperatures and improved sales. In general, Yilmaz has seen gratifying sales rates in recent years, certainly as far as Turkish melons are concerned. "Above all, the Kirkagac variety is particularly popular with Turkish specialist retailers and supermarkets."
