Avocado sales are increasing in Italy

Avocados are getting increasingly popular, as confirmed by wholesaler Tazio Zavaglia. "We handle three types of avocados and the ready-to-eat versions are definitely the most popular."

Avocados from Peru

The more the produce is ready to be consumed, the more it is in demand. The Hass variety from Peru is currently sold at €21 per 4 kg crate.

The oblong variety, not ready to eat, from South Africa is less popular and is sold at €17 per crate. Another dark type which is left to ripen for longer on trees is quoted at €18 per crate.

Avocados from South Africa

"Demand has been increasing as restaurants use avocados a lot to make peculiar dishes. I even tasted it in a hamburger and I have to say it was very good."

One of the most popular varieties

Consumption drops slightly in summer because people tend to prefer summer fruit such as stone fruit, melons and watermelons but, considering the whole year, demand is progressively increasing.
