The 2018/19 Spanish orange campaign has been marked by the low prices paid to producers and the concerns about the entry into the Spanish market of citrus fruits from South Africa. While the domestic market continues to absorb the invasion of foreign products, as denounced by the sector, the producers suffer the devaluation of their oranges to unprecedented levels.
One of the people affected this campaign has been the producer Enrique Llopis, from the municipality of Algemesí, who has been paid 118.41 Euro for the 7,872.5 kg of Valencia Late oranges grown in one of his fields. Also, for the 2,542 kg of first class oranges, he has received 106.76 Euro, which is just over four cents per kilo.
Llopis says that "never, not even in the worst campaigns," had he seen prices like those paid this year. There is a diversity of crops in his plantations, so he has been able to see first-hand how much of a difference is there in the price of the various products. While kakis have generated a profit, the prices of the Navel Late and other orange varieties have not even covered the production costs. Therefore, the final balance has been one of losses.
