In China, one of the main producers of fresh pears in the world, the yearly production is huge and the varieties are extremely varied. In recent years, with the improvement of planting techniques and the continuous emergence of new varieties, the competition of fresh pear varieties on the market has become increasingly fierce, as consumers are becoming increasingly demanding of the taste and appearance of pears when purchasing.
Akizuki pears
The Akizuki pear is a hybrid variety introduced from Japan. Compared with other pear varieties, it is more storage-resistant and its taste doesn’t change much after long-term storage. In addition, this variety is juicy and sweet and is high in yield. In the past few years, it has won high market popularity in China - its sales through e-commerce platforms have been especially strong.

"Our Akizuki pears come from Pingdu City, Qingdao, Shandong Province. This season will kick off in early September. After the cold storage, the supply period can last for about three months. The hails that occurred in April did not lead to lower production in the Pingdu production area, but the quality has been compromised and the volume of commercial fruit has decreased compared with previous years,” Mr. Zheng Lilong of Qingdao Wanguo Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd. said.

“I estimate that due to the lower volume of high-quality commodity fruits, the price of this year's Akizuki pears will be higher than the previous season. At this stage, we are receiving pre-orders, hoping to utilize our own brand of ‘Wanguo Fresh' to establish steady cooperations with supermarkets, wholesale markets, and other channels nationwide."
