With the exception of a few weeks in July when there was overproduction, it has been a very good summer for Spanish melons and watermelons. "One of the best seasons in years," says Miguel Gonzalez of MG Fruit. "Many people in Germany and the Netherlands went on holiday in their own country and the warm weather certainly stimulated consumption."
"Now the weather isn't as good and the trade is a bit quieter, except for the Galias, which are still selling well," says Miguel. "In the meantime, the volumes from Spain are decreasing and the first Brazilian melons are already arriving. Those prospects are also good. From September to mid-October, prices for Brazilian melons are traditionally strong. The market is empty and there is not too much product coming this way. due to the lack of freight capacity. This prevents Brazilian exporters from shipping the volumes they would like."
