The campaign will last until May 2021

Avocado harvest kicks off in Spain

The month of December is the starting point for the Hass avocado campaign in Spain, which is expected to last until May 2021, and whose results should exceed those of the previous season, especially in these times, with consumption gradually on the rise.

“We have reached the most important moment in the entire production phase; the one that will allow us to continue supplying consumers with this superfood, so essential in Spanish kitchens. Spain is one of the key European countries when it comes to the production and export of avocados, and that makes this harvest very important for us. Producers are facing this season with great optimism, confident that, as every year, we will exceed our expectations, not only in terms of quantity, but also quality,” says Xavier Equihua, CEO of the WAO.

La Axarquía, in Malaga, and the coast of Granada are the enclaves par excellence of the avocado harvest in Spain, and also where the largest producer partners operate, not only locally, but also in the world. Reyes Gutiérrez, a specialist in the international market, has been producing and distributing this superfood for almost three decades and become a leader in the fruit's sale to other markets, such as France, the United Kingdom, the Nordic countries, Germany and some Eastern European countries.

The deployment of people will very soon become visible in the fields. WAO members have many producers devoted to this task, working to achieve the objective that the sector has set itself in recent years: to seek an optimal balance between quality production and the protection of the environment, as well as the fair marketing of these products, from which dozens of local communities make a living.

In Spain, a good part of the avocado production is intended for domestic consumption and the rest for export to other markets, especially Europe. It is a product that is becoming increasingly important in the national economic scenario.
