Spring frosts have slowed down the volumes

Slow but steady progress for Altedo Igp asparagus

The Italian Asparago di Altedo IGP (PGI Green Asparagus of Altedo) started with little success because of the spring frosts. The low temperatures first damaged and then slowed down the production, after a promising start.

"Until the frosts arrived, we were off to a very good start, with an excellent product and very good prices. Then the cold weather damaged the sprouts, which we had to cut and leave in the field. Once the most critical nights were over, the product had a hard time restarting, because it needs average temperatures of around 17-18°C to reach full production," explained Gianni Cesari, president of the Consortium for the protection of the Green Asparagus of Altedo.

Therefore, the year got off to a late start, prices are good, but the harvest was well below potential. The question is how the market will react when there is a return to full production.

Over the past few months, the Pgi green asparagus of Altedo has been included in a new specification that improves and identifies its production more precisely.

"The new disciplinary will increase the investments in Pgi asparagus, which, in recent years, has seen an increasing interest from consumers all over Europe," said Cesari (see Freshplaza of 12/1/2020).
