Tomato sales aren't easy at the moment. "Especially the small varieties, like cherry and vine cherry tomatoes, are really struggling," says Dirk van Nieuwkerk of Anaco Greeve in the Netherlands. "The restaurant terraces are now open for a few hours. But otherwise, a lot's still closed. The market situation certainly isn't healthy yet."
"As a trader, we're strongly focused on the wholesale channel. It's taking much less, and retailers can't absorb everything. As long as the harvest remains within limits, things go well. But as soon as there's too much on the market, prices immediately drop. All these holidays in May don't help sales either."
"For now, prices in the large segment remain reasonably stable. The advantage is that there aren't so many of these on the market. And there's little competition from other countries. But I'm apprehensive about the coming weeks. Tomato harvesting has to begin at some point," Dirk concludes.
