There are currently very few limes on the European market. "Mexico usually sends a lot of product at this time of year. But that supply has almost halted now. There has been virtually no demand. So, most of the available supply is going to the United States," says Marcel Verdellen of Satori in the Netherlands.
"Brazil wants to send limes but can't do much. That's due to the reefer equipment shortage. It's generally a very unusual situation. Nobody knows exactly what's going on. I'm therefore very reluctant to import. The bars will open, and overseas travel will be possible again. Then you could end up with a repeat of events. Prices were more than €10 per tray of limes."
According to Marcel, the ginger market seems to be stable. "We now carry Thai ginger and are waiting for Brazil. Chinese ginger is also available and is fairly stably priced. That market's just chugging away nicely," he concludes.
