Martine Lisseveld, Reijnpack, the Netherlands

"Hoping chicory demand will pick up when COVID-19 rules eased in Italy next week, "

The European chicory market was remarkably quiet last week. "At first, we thought it was because of Workers Day. That's on May 1 in Italy. Italy's by far our most important sales country. But demand remained limited throughout the week. Demand did pick up yesterday," says Martine Lisseveld-Reijngoudt of Dutch chicory packaging company Reijnpack.

"Sales were still going well at the beginning of last week. This week, however, things, unfortunately, took a turn for the worse. Prices are now under pressure, with kg prices at around €0.80. That's also because prices in Belgium and France are much lower. Our sales used to be more stable. But now it's more erratic. However, so far, we can't complain."

"More COVID-19 rules will be relaxed next week. So, we think demand will rebound. There's a shortage of chicory pens threatening the market too. That's because the weather's still hampering sowing," concludes Martine.
