Producers' organization O.P. Terre della Luce

Small berries available all year long

We produce blackberries, raspberries and blueberries grown at different altitudes to lengthen the production calendar and guarantee exclusively Italian products to the markets.

"Our small fruit fields are located in Basilicata, Italy, one part of which is in greenhouse polytunnels in the Metapontino area to allow us to harvest especially in the winter months, and another part located in Vulture, in the province of Potenza, where cultivation takes place in the open field with a production that goes from June to November. The varieties are selected for the two areas, the productions are timed and managed using sustainable cultivation methods," said Carmela Suriano, president of O.P. Terre della Luce, located in Policoro, and founded in 2017 with 430 hectares, 30 members and an extensive commercial catalog.

"A few days ago, we reopened with the harvest of blackberries, and soon we will also be adding raspberries and blueberries, with the aim to ensure continuity and quantity of supplies for almost 11 months of the year. At the moment, we are able to harvest blackberries twice a week, selecting only those fruits with the right degree of ripeness. The volumes reach the general markets and the large-scale retail trade after 24 hours from the harvest. Sustainability, organoleptic characteristics and freshness are our strong points. These are fundamental elements that allow us to be ahead of our competitors from Latin American and Maghreb countries".

The interest for small fruits is growing in Italy as well, even though it is still far from the high standards of northern Europe. O.P. Terre della Luce's goal is to be able to increase the areas destined to small fruits in the coming years, as we are aware not only of the health benefits, but also of the economic value for farmers. However, these are cultivations that need important investments and agronomic know-how. For this reason, we are willing to support all those who want to start entrepreneurial initiatives in this field. Collaboration is essential to improve production and to better face the market".
