In the Netherlands, wholesaler Ibrahim Nieuwegein currently has huge Moroccan pomegranates on offer. "We've been receiving these for a while now. And, thus, we have an exclusive product. We belong to the select group of importers whose assortments include these pomegranates," says Mohammed Arab.
This family business, founded in 1998, is a fruit and vegetable/meat wholesaler. "We started importing these Moroccan pomegranates in 2019. The cultivation in Morocco isn't that big yet. These products are mainly grown around the city of Guercif. But we're now sourcing them from Berkane. That region is best known for its mandarins."
"We can distinguish ourselves well on the market with these pomegranates. They're of the well-known Mollar variety. However, they're sweeter than the Spanish ones. And we have plenty of large sizes (size 12) available. Some of the pomegranates weigh as much as a kilo, or even more, each," says Ibrahim, enthusiastically. "Prices are at around €14/15 per box for the thick calibers. The small sizes are going for between €10 and €12.50."
Pomegranates under the Lamyae housebrand
Ibrahim Nieuwegein sells most of its Moroccan pomegranates to Dutch and Belgian stores and vendors. "We sell a carload a week. From October onwards, pomegranate demand always starts rising. People are keen on seasonal fruits," Mohammed concludes.
