Leafy plants, herbs, strawberries, tomatoes, peppers, and even passion fruit: these are all products that can be grown above ground thanks to aquaponics, a virtuous farming technique where waste from fish is used as nutrients.
“Eauzons is a project of a group of agricultural engineers who wanted to develop products of very high taste quality using an extremely virtuous production method based on a water cycle,” explains Jean-Albert, president of Eauzons, a pioneer of aquaponics in France who has built a farm in the Gers department. The production is intended for local shops and restaurants that are looking for ultra-fresh and tasty products. “Our philosophy is to deliver ultra-fresh goods in very short circuits, so we have two deliveries per week for our professionals, as well as some direct sales twice a week on site,” explains Felix Haget, general director of Eauzons.

“Thanks to our hatchery, we have complete control over the chain”
“It is a closed circuit that allows us to save a lot of water and avoid using phytosanitary products or fertilizers. The innovation we have is that we will combine the best of fish farming and off-farm plant cultivation. Our specificity is to control the entire chain, from the egg to the processing of the fish (rillettes, filets) and from the seed to the harvest of our tomatoes and the delivery to our clients,” explains Felix Haget.

The largest aquaponic farm in France, operational in 2023
After building a pilot farm at the end of 2019 in the Gers department, Eauzons is now working on a new project to build an XXL aquaponics farm. “Our project is to deploy large farms near the big cities in order to make these exceptional products accessible to all,” explains Jean-Albert.
It is in Lescar (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) that this new aquaponics farm, the largest in France, will start its activity in early 2023. The pilot farm in the Gers department has a greenhouse of 1,600 m² and is equipped with the latest aquaculture and horticulture technologies. It is now paving the way for an innovative 10,000 m² farm combining aquaculture and above-ground cultivation.
