Demand for organic products in Spain increased more than demand for mass consumption products during 2021

An IRI study has concluded that the Spanish demand for organic products grew more than the demand for mass consumption products during 2021. However, it should be noted that the growth registered in organic products is mainly due to the increase in prices. Demand increased by 0.9% while prices increased by 2.8%, leading, therefore, to a 3.7% increase in value.

Frozen products experienced the highest growth in demand (+54.4%), followed by fruit and vegetables (+13.8%).

According to the study, sales of organic products are concentrated in large supermarkets (47.7%), which gained a 0.9 market share by value when compared to the previous year. In addition, there are 2.4% more organic references on the shelves than in the last TAM.

The southern and northeastern areas of the country contribute the most to the growth of organic products. Specifically, the area of Catalonia accounted for 17.9% of the market share and contributed to its growth by 0.8%. It was followed by Andalusia, which has a 14.8% of the market's value and a 1.1% contribution to its growth.

According to the '2nd Wave: State of innovation in Mass Consumption', a study carried out by IRI and Lantern, practically all distributors and manufacturers are working on initiatives related to sustainability.

They are mainly working on innovation in sustainable and efficient packaging, the proper management of materials and waste generated by its activity. They are also working on circular economy strategies, on the sustainability of the supply chain, and inputs of sustainable origin. In fact, no retailers denied working on sustainable initiatives.
