Not all types of soil are suitable for a particular crop. However, it is often possible to achieve extraordinary results using certain cultivation techniques. Even in very difficult soil conditions, such as clay soils located in swampy areas. This is the case of Ismaele Capanna who, together with his brother Nicola, decided to plant an almond orchard on an inherited piece of land, where traditionally fodder or wheat was grown. This land is located in Castellana Marina, in the province of Taranto, in Apulia, a few kilometres from the Ionian Sea.

"We were tired of seeing crops with very low yields on this land, despite being aware of the significant and persistent water flooding. After receiving advice from specialists, we planted the first 2,400 Lauranne almond trees (6.5 hectares) on GF677 rootstock in January 2020. The technique of ridging on the rows, with a height of 40 cm and a width of about 1.5 m, allowed us to create our almond orchard, which is now managed according to the innovative Zaragoza method. The irrigation system was installed in the middle of the trunk so that the roots can develop fully on it. The plants have an extraordinary vigor and this year we expect our first harvest."

"The soil is clayey/loamy in texture, with a tendency to compact if overworked and to crack in summer. The soil is also poorly ventilated. We avoid unnecessary tillage and respect the spontaneous turf, which allows us to respect the structure and at the same time, biodiversity. The presence of a varied wild flora enables pollinating insects to work their magic."

"We are very satisfied with the cultivation solution adopted and the revival of a soil that has never been used to its full potential, because it was said not to be good enough. We are also very grateful to agricultural expert Vito Vitelli, who helped in all the phases of preparation and management of the plantation."
