Workers at the Dutch vegetable farm, Wijnen Square Crops, are currently hard at work packaging a new cucumber variety: the Midi. This 'half' cucumber weighs about 180 grams and, according to the growers, is 'the solution against food waste and plasticization.'
These handy vitamin bombs are only half as big as their 'normal' cousin, so they can be wholly eaten and used in meals. They, thus, do not have to be wrapped in plastic to extend their shelf life. And, since the stalk is removed during harvesting, there is no waste.
This new vegetable is 'taking the English market by storm,' says the grower. It is also grown virtually climate-neutrally. The company, which provides housing for its migrant laborers in its greenhouse complex, received the Horticultural Business Award 2022 earlier this year.
