Roberto Graziani of the Italian Graziani Packaging

"The paper industry in turmoil with steady increases"

"In our industry, costs are rising every day, hand in hand with energy costs. As a matter of fact, paper mills consume huge amounts of gas. We can' t go on like this, companies are at risk of failing." Roberto Graziani, owner of Graziani Packaging is concerned about what he has been seeing and hearing from fellow entrepreneurs.

"The paper industry has been in turmoil with constant cost increases," Graziani says. In a little over a year, we have had to adjust price lists upward nine times. Normally, in the same time frame we would do two, at most. Some paper mills are deciding to shut down production because of unsustainable costs. Something needs to be done by someone to curb what looks more like speculation than a real shortage of raw materials."

Graziani Packaging operates all over the world. It is part of the Cermac Consortium, which promotes its presence and outreach especially abroad. Graziani will also be present at Fruit Attraction in Madrid (4 - 6 October 2022)." The market, in these months, has proved to be challenging, but it has not penalized us," said Graziani, thinking of his company's efforts, "as we have still managed to keep the quality standard always high.

Due to logistical (cost) problems, the company had to abandon the Australia and New Zealand markets for this year. "We have told our customers there that we will resume cooperation when logistics costs fall back into the normal range. Among other things, road transport has also been showing uncomfortable signs in recent months, with rising costs and delays."

"Currently, the weakest link in the entire supply chain, is made up of those who work only with the large-scale retail trade, as they often struggle to be recognized for the higher costs incurred. It is essential to put a stop to this escalation of expenses, otherwise many companies will close," concluded Graziani.
