Robbert van Essen, Yex:

“Retail pomelo programs started well; up to wholesalers to keep that going”

Yex is one of the largest pomelo importers in the Netherlands. As such, it kicked off the season with the arrival of the first Chinese product a few weeks ago. "At the beginning of the harvest, the pomelos aren't yet at their best, flavor-wise, and the peel's still quite thick. Now, several weeks into the season, the flavor's improving, and the skin's thinning. The fruits also become a bit weightier," says Sourcing Manager Robbert van Essen.

"Last year was a challenging season for many goods, certainly including pomelo. Freight prices reached an extraordinary peak of almost $15,000. Store prices were sky-high, and as the year progressed, this proved too much of a good thing. At the end of the season, prices fell, and you could no longer cover costs."

"This year, everything's a little different again. Freight prices have plummeted, which has led to lower retail prices. Store sales are off to a good start, too," continues Robbert.

"The next few weeks will show whether that will benefit consumption too and what kind of year it will be. It's now up to the wholesalers to keep this momentum going."

"A little while ago," adds Robbert, "we could sell those first boxes of pomelo for €18,50. That's decreasing somewhat."

"Prices vary a bit between €16,50 and €15, depending on the color and size. We have good arrivals of various sizes in both white and pink. All our pomelo are correctly certified and are currently of nice quality," Robbert concludes.
