Producer Luciano Alessandri is very pleased with the current campaign of Angelica di Romagna pears. "We have produced approximately 500 tons on around twenty hectares, so yields are good, especially if compared with the disaster that was last year."
Prices have also gone back to a more normal level. "In 2021, due to the lack of produce, we reached figures that were too high. This year, they hover between €1.20 and €3.50 depending on the quality. Angelica pears have an excellent flavor, which is why they are popular. The only market that is late this year is Sicily, as Coscia pears are still available, so our variety is struggling as it is similar."
Contracts with some retail chains are going well, and sales will continue until January 10th. "I am talking about supermarket chains in Emilia Romagna, Marche and Lombardy. Supplies are constant and homogeneous and our brand is getting popular."
The story of this variety is quite unique: it comes from Marche, from the Pesaro-Urbino area more precisely, and a festival dedicated to this fruit is organized every year. "However, the number of growers dropped over the years and very few of us are still cultivating it professionally."
"The high Brix level makes the pears very sweet and they boast a very fine texture typical of summer pears. The shelf-life is really impressive as, even when they take on a deep yellow color, the flesh inside remains firm and healthy. We carried out tests and the fruits can keep until March, even though stocks usually finish in January as demand exceeds supply."
