Kees van den Bosch: "Some onion punters are going to make good money next year"

"Leek market recovering, cabbage market stable"

The weather is colder, and many Polish employees are making their way home from the Netherlands for Christmas. Those two factors are making for short supplies and an uptick in the market for many winter vegetables.

"The leek market, for example, is currently recovering. Prices are now at around €0.85/kg. A month ago, it was only €0.35," says Kees van den Bosch of Freeland. "Spanish iceberg lettuce is also in somewhat higher demand, and we're expecting prices to increase further in the coming weeks."

"Celeriac demand is good. These aren't priced too high and are selling well. Those are lagging behind cabbage sales a bit," Kees explains. "At the end of that harvest, there was a lot of demand from Europe, which we thought would continue. Prices are still high, but demand has stabilized."

"There is demand for carrots, but it's not huge. Prices have picked up somewhat. That's, however, not because there's all that much trade going on. Those in cold storage are now slowly being sold. Finally, with onions, prices are only increasing slightly. Those don't seem to be rising. Some punters are going to make good money next year," Kees concludes.
