Spain is expected to approve a Draft Royal Decree on packaging and packaging waste this month that will ban plastic packaging for fresh fruit and vegetables in quantities of less than 1.5 kilograms, as well as other recyclable, biodegradable or compostable packaging (with some exceptions based on the risk of spoilage of the fruit and vegetables, which would be regulated after the Project is published).
"This renders it impossible to differentiate the products and makes optimal storage and providing information to the consumer much harder," FEPEX stated. "It is a measure that is also contrary to promoting the consumption of fruit and vegetables, especially small-sized convenience products."
"The proposal presented by the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITERD) is more restrictive than the current EU guidelines recommend and goes even further than the new proposal submitted by the European Commission on November 30 to review packaging and packaging waste regulations. That's why FEPEX is calling on the government to withdraw this ban and wait for the processing of the new Community legislation, which will be discussed throughout 2023 in the European Parliament and in the Council."
