Local harvest in India delayed Turkish apple exports by a month

“Over the coming weeks, demand and shipments to India will increase”

The apples from Turkey enjoyed some really cold weather before the harvest. According to Atiye Kirit Arhanli, owner of Turkish apple exporter Crimson Fresh Fruits, this has resulted in a good quality harvest: “Our company exports apples mostly to India and Dubai. We don’t export to Europe or the US at this time, but we'd love to enter these markets as well. This season, the harvest has been very good. We experienced cold temperatures, which means the coloring and the quality of the apples are top-notch. We’re also in a season where the orchards have given us a big harvest, so we expect to double our apple exports compared to the previous season.”

Due to a large local harvest in India, exports from Turkey to the Indian market were delayed by about a month, Sarhanli explains. “The harvest started in September, and we started our exports in October. We expect our season to finish around mid-June. For India however, there was a huge local harvest of apples. Normally we’d start sending shipments to India around the start of November, but this year the shipments started only two weeks ago. This means over the coming weeks, demand and shipments will increase. Therefore demand overall is really good for us and we expect no problems at all with selling all of our apples.”

Although the weather has been of great help for the quality of this year’s apples, it could be different in 2023: “Next season could be a bit worrying. As stated before, the apples need cold weather to become of great quality, and so far it’s been hot and not snowing at all. So we hope the weather will help us out in the coming months to ensure our harvest next season will be of the same quality as we’re seeing this current year,” Sarhanli concludes.
