Joey Deen, Denimpex:

"Due to current chaos in China, it is practically impossible to load ginger or garlic"

The abrupt ending of lockdowns in China has resulted in the COVID pandemic spreading rapidly through the country. "Hospitals are getting overcrowded again and self-tests and medicines are hard to come by. Moreover, many Chinese are afraid to go outside for fear of getting sick," says Joey Deen of Denimpex.

This also poses major problems for ginger and garlic imports at the moment. "I have approached all my supplier circle, but it is practically impossible at the moment to find staff to load ginger or garlic. All orders placed are being postponed and new orders are no longer being taken," Joey said.

"How the situation will develop in the coming weeks is difficult to assess. The fact is that this year's Chinese New Year starts extremely early on 22 January. The last shipments will be done at most a week before Chinese New Year. If there are few shipments of ginger or garlic in the coming weeks, it could start causing huge shortages," Joey said.
