The European Commission has authorized the placing on the market of novel foods for human consumption made from mushrooms and crickets, among other ingredients, according to several regulations published on Wednesday in the Official Journal of the European Union (EU).
One of the rules greenlights the sale of pea protein and rice fermented by mycelia of shiitake mushroom as a novel food in the EU after the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded that its use is safe under the proposed conditions.
In this way, said protein can be used in bakeries, cereals, beverages, dairy products, meat preparations, soups, and salads, among other products.
Mushroom flour with vitamin D2 is another new food that is now allowed to be sold in the EU, though it can't be used in food supplements for infants and young children.
