Polish inflation reaching nearly 20 per cent for the second year in a row

“Prices for Royal Gala and Golden apples have been going up regularly”

The Royal Gala and Golden Delicious apples are doing quite well during the Polish apple season, says Jan Nowakowski, manager for Polish apple distributor Genesis Fresh. “This season has been a very good season for Polish Royal Gala and Golden Delicious apples, and it has been positive since the very start of the season. After Christmas and New Year the season resumed with stable demand for both of these varieties. Other varieties are not doing that well, though.”

Other varieties aren’t moving as fast, meaning there are more stocks available. Nowakowski did notice prices are increasing for the two most popular varieties. “Depending on the varieties, apples are moved in different ways. Due to less volumes of high quality Gala apples, demand for these fruits is stronger than usual. Prices for Royal Gala and Golden apples have been going up regularly since the beginning of the harvest time. During New Year, we also observed the prices increasing slightly. For other varieties, we know there are lots of apples in Europe this season and apples like Red Jonaprince, Jonagored, Idared, Gloster are distributed with stable but slower frequencies.”

The energy costs are a big factor in the large inflation numbers of Poland, which Nowakowski states is reaching 20 per cent for the second year in a row: “The price of energy has increased since last year and it’s not going to be any lower. The government did freeze the prices for the consumers and slightly helped out the Polish commercial companies. This year, there are new increases for all costs of maintenance. Our inflation is reaching nearly 20 per cent for the second year in a row. It will have an impact on the prices of both fruit and vegetables in Poland.”

“We expect to have good demand for our other varieties in the second part of the season, starting from March until August. However, the prices are hard to predict. We may face a difficult season in terms of covering the costs of our production,” Nowakowski concludes.
