Spanish and Dutch pepper sales in the EU decrease while Moroccan pepper sales grow

According to a study by Hortoinfo, Spanish pepper sales in the EU between January and October 2022 decreased by 8.53% (i.e., -42.69 million kilos) over the previous year. This is the third year in which Spanish pepper sales to the EU markets have decreased. Before that, exports to the EU markets increased every year.

Despite this decrease, Spain is still the country that sells the most peppers to its EU partners. During the period analyzed, Spain sold 457.82 million kilos of peppers to the EU, accounting for 40.75% of all the peppers that the EU purchased.

Even though the price of peppers in 2022 stood at €1.83/kg (i.e., 3.98% more than in the previous year), the value of the Spanish pepper sold in the EU in the period analyzed decreased by 4.78% over the same period of the last year totaling 838.88 million euro.

The Netherlands sold 261.57 million kilos of peppers to the EU between January and October 2022, i.e., 6.34% or 17.71 million kilos less than in 2021. Dutch pepper exports to the EU stood at 555.72 million euros, with an average price of € 2.12/kg, i.e., 15.85% more expensive than the Spanish product.

Contrary to these declines, Moroccan pepper sales increased by 6.16%, standing at 114.73 million kilos, i.e., 6.6 million kilos more than in the previous year. Moroccan pepper exports to the EU amounted to 133.47 million euros, and their average price stood at € 1.16/kg.

In general, the EU purchased 1,123.54 million kilos of peppers between January and October 2022, i.e., 7.22% less than in the same period of the previous year.
