The warehouses in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia are slowly but surely running out of goods, while the cold stores are still largely closed, he says. "Most farmers are still holding out for better prices for ware potatoes, which is currently reflected in a lower willingness to sell. This is because in recent years there has always been a price increase for premium potatoes around this time of year," says Tim Tolls of the potato wholesaler of the same name in Willich, North Rhine-Westphalia.
Overall, the current price level is particularly 'steadfast,' Tolls continues. "Prices are adjusting to the circumstances, meaning the increased production and storage costs. In the end, most potato-growing areas have been able to harvest more produce than previously expected. Due to heat stress, the stored product is usually physiologically somewhat older. However, problematic lots and rejects will show up later during storage."
Table potato crops in distress
Table potato production is coming under increasing pressure. In addition to grains, farmers are increasingly turning to industrial potatoes instead of table potatoes, Tolls confirms. "According to current information, the conditions for industrial potato cultivation in 2023/2024 are up to 40 percent higher than in previous years. These attractive contract conditions are not only available here in western Germany, but in neighboring countries as well. This naturally represents major competition for table potato cultivation, especially as the cultivation of industrial potatoes is associated with a lower risk. As of today, however, there will not be massive shortages in the coming years."
