Griba Vivai (South Tyrol, Italy)

Apple varieties from an innovative breeding programme

"After taking part in the fair for the first time in 2020, Griba Vivai will again be present at Fruit Logistica with a stand dedicated to apple variety breeding. The fair in Berlin will provide a space to meet new operators interested in the field of apple variety innovation, and at the same time, it will allow us to present our most promising selections," says Antonio Dal Ri, breeder of Griba Vivai, a company based in Bolzano, South Tyrol.

Griba Vivai holds more than 35 years of experience in arboriculture, producing high-quality apple trees that are distributed in 40 countries around the world. The high-quality standards and professionalism of the sales and advisory service led by director Stefan Nicolodi form the basis of a trusting relationship with local and international customers.

Griba nursery, high-yielding plants

"We have always paid attention to variety innovation when it comes to apple growing," says Dal Ri. "We offer our customers the best available clones of the traditional varieties Gala, Golden, Fuji Stark, etc. And now we are also introducing our breeding research project results to the industry, which we have been working on for 15 years. We generated many hybrids through a controlled method, which has given us a large number of seedlings. Our breeding activity has enabled us to identify some varieties with interesting traits."

"The aim of Griba's breeding project is to create new quality varieties that are attractive, crisp and juicy and with a good balance between sweetness and acidity. The apples must be both appealing and tasty to consumers, but at the same time easy to grow, adaptable to climatic conditions and environmentally sustainable. With this in mind, resistance to various diseases such as scab and mildew are fundamental criteria for Griba when selecting a new variety," explains the expert.

A new variety under development

The new varieties of Griba Vivai, which are already at an advanced stage of development, are promising. Several cultivation trials are underway thanks to the cooperation with European partners and from other continents.

Griba Vivai's presence at Fruit Logistica this year is intended as "a new opportunity to meet growers, distributors, variety managers and anyone interested in apple variety innovation". Feel free to contact Griba Vivai for an appointment at the fair or just come to Hall 6.2, Stand A-52.
