The EU will audit Argentine citrus fruit farms exporting lemons to Europe

According to Agronoa, in March, a European mission will visit Tucuman establishments that want to export to the old continent.

The Minister of Productive Development of Tucumán, Alvaro Simon Padros, met with the director of the NOA South Regional Center of SENASA, Jose Luque.

“The meeting was in preparation for the next audit that the European Union will carry out during the month of March in the citrus fruit farms that decide to export fresh lemon to EU markets,” the officials stated. “We coordinated the work of national and provincial public bodies linked to citrus production,” they added.

It should be noted that these audits are part of the re-opening of the European market to Argentine citrus fruits after Argentine lemon exports to the European Union were suspended in July 2020 due to the large number of lemon shipments intercepted with Black Spot. In August of that year, the European Union decreed a total ban on citrus fruit imports from Argentina due to the high number of shipments in which it had detected Citrus Black Spot (CBS). Black spot is caused by Phyllosticta citricarpa and is one of the main fungal diseases of citrus fruits.

This ban was lifted by the EU in mid-2021 after Argentina implemented the corrective measures requested by Europe. The audits of the production farms will be carried out within the framework of the re-opening of the EU market to Argentine citrus imports, which will begin to take effect this May.
