Onions remain one of the most demanded positions in the fruit and vegetable market of Ukraine, EastFruit project analysts report. Trade in the segment is currently very active, while the supply is rapidly declining, which spurs another round of growth in prices for onions.
According to the project’s daily monitoring data, Ukrainian farms currently offer high-quality onions for sale at 33-39 UAH/kg ($0.90-1.07/kg), which is on average 10% more expensive than a week earlier.
This week, the list of countries-suppliers of onions to Ukraine has slightly expanded. In addition to Germany, the Netherlands and Egypt started exporting their onions to the Ukrainian market. But the supply is very small and cannot fully satisfy the high demand in the segment.
It should be noted that now the price of onions in Ukraine is on average 4.5 times higher than in the same period last year. At the same time, market participants do not rule out that the upward trend in prices will continue, and the growth rate of onion prices will accelerate as stocks in the storage facilities of Ukrainian farms decrease.
