Since the beginning of 2023, tomato prices in Russian stores have been rising rapidly. This is because the number of deliveries of tomatoes from China, Türkiye, Georgia, Serbia and North Macedonia to Russia have decreased several times already this year.
According to Fontanka, in 2022, imports of tomatoes from China fell by almost one and a half times; from Türkiye - more than two; from Georgia, Serbia, and North Macedonia - three times.
With such a drop in imports, imported tomatoes on the shelves have roughly doubled in price, and this is just the purchase price for retailers. Ordinary Russian citizens will have to pay a lot more for tomatoes, which are now catching up to the price of meat. According to official statistics, purchase prices have increased by almost 12% over the year.
