Onions are probably the last thing most people would choose to eat on a Valentines Day date, but for onion lovers there is a solution: The British sweet red onion.
UK onion breeder/ grower Alastair Findlay has been developing the sweet red onion for 25 years, now in his 80’s he has tasted more than 10,000 onions over the years.
“The sweet red onion has virtually no pungency, which allows for the natural sweetness of the variety to come forward in all its glory,” according to Stephen Hedderly, Managing Director at Bedfordshire Growers.
“This year we have launched our new improved variety with a consistent delicious flavour profile and stunning red colouration both internally and externally, the variety with a single centre has an outstanding texture allowing for a crunchy bite.”
“The onions is perfect eaten raw or a fantastic ingredient to cook with for perfect caramelisation. The UK season runs from September until May. It is now grown in both Spain and New Zealand as well as exported to the Middle East. We also have a partnership with a US company who will grow 40-50 Acres this season for US retail.”
The first sweet red onion was coincidentally launched in the UK on Valentine’s Day in 2015.
“For perfect breath and no tears, The British sweet red onion is your perfect Valentine partner. Happy Valentine’s Day!”
