There is a shortage in the European cauliflower market. "We're getting requests for cauliflower from far and wide," says Dennis van Tricht of AGF Direct in the Netherlands. "First, the winter was too hot, and now it's too cold. So, we're getting hardly any cauliflower from France. And I expect this to continue for another two or three weeks."
"Besides the French supply, the cold weather has hindered supply from Northern Spain too. It's slightly warmer in the south of Spain, so they're releasing somewhat more cauliflower. But, it's not nearly enough to meet demand."
AGF Direct is, however, not going to profit hugely. "On the free market, you can now make €18 to €20, but almost all our cauliflower is grown on contract, which we currently have to all cut. The only advantage is that the problem's so widespread it's accepted. There are even supermarkets that haven't offered cauliflower and broccoli for two weeks now. It's an unprecedented situation with no end in sight yet," Dennis concludes.
