Spanish fruit and vegetable imports from Portugal and France increase

Until November 2022, Spanish fruit and vegetable imports grew by 15% year-on-year, maintaining the upward trend of recent years, totaling 2,247 million euro, in line with the increases of the main Community suppliers, France and Portugal, which recorded 33% and 17% growth, respectively.

Between January and November 2022, Spain imported 883,943 tons of fruits and vegetables from France for 325.6 million euro, i.e. a 20% and 33% increase in volume and value, respectively, over the same period of 2021.

Meanwhile, imports from Portugal increased by 15% in volume and 17% in value in the period analyzed, standing at 321,911 tons and 267.4 million euro.

France continues to be the Spanish market's main Community supplier, although its growth has not been as high as that of Portugal in recent years. In the last five years, from 2017 to 2021, imports from France grew by 2%, going from 824,103 tons to 837,737 tons, but their value fell by 8%, going from 304 million euro to 278 million euro, according to data from the Customs and Space Tax Department of the Tax Agency, processed by FEPEX.

In the same period, imports from Portugal grew by 5% in volume, going from 289,262 tons in 2017 to 302,765 tons in 2021, and by 51% in value, going from 164.5 million euro to 248.3 million euro.
