“It’s the start of the construction for a Maersk warehouse that will significantly stand out in our European portfolio of distribution centers,” says Jens-Ole Krenzien, Managing Director Maersk Area North Europe Continent (Benelux, Germany, Poland, Austria, Switzerland).
The space of the warehouse is 23,000 sqm with 120 docks. New jobs created are about 175 (60 white collar and 115 blue collar).
The construction of the warehouse will be fast. It will be realized within some 12 months after the building permit was granted. The delivery of the warehouse will be mid-December, with operations commencing at the end of 2023 and into January 2024. Arcadis are the Architects, and Cordeel is the construction company.
It is the combination of the features, which make this project so special says Maerks:
- It’s located right on a terminal within Maasvlakte II, in the heart of Europe’s largest port.
- The warehouse has its direct internal road connections with the terminal. And it has direct access for outbound shipments by truck.
- Thirdly, it is on Maersk’s own APM Terminal which means that Maersk is in full control of the operations and can accelerate cargo of a customer if needed.
- Direct link to the STAR depot which is perfect for temporary storage of full or empty containers.
- The warehouse offers good access to various other terminals in the port as well as to the Maersk flow warehouse network across Europe.
- It will also offer a fully bonded customs environment plus a dedicated area for Value Added Services.
“The new warehouse will allow a super-fast and unmatched delivery of containers within hours upon arrival of the vessel,” says Jens-Ole Krenzien.
Maersk has set itself ambitious goals for decarbonizing logistics on land, ocean and in the air. Therefore, all future assets will be with very low greenhouse gas emissions. Our new x-dock warehouse in Rotterdam will be built according to the BREEAM Excellent sustainability standard. Furthermore, we will benefit from a cold-store warehouse, which is planned next to the cross dock. We will re-use the left-over heat from the future cold-store facility in the x-dock warehouse. This will save annually more than 200 000 Kilo-Watt-hours in electricity.
“We will be able to align every step from vessel arrival, discharge of the cargo, handling in the x-dock and a seamless connection to the optimal hinterland transport. This will guarantee robust, sustainable and secure hinterland connections for our customers and a reliable just-in-time delivery,” says Jens-Ole Krenzien.
