How much has Almeria's tomato production decreased in the last 5 campaigns?

According to the data that Hortoinfo has prepared based on information from the Observatory of Prices and Markets of the Junta de Andalucía, between the 2017/2018 and 2021/2022 campaigns, Almeria's greenhouse tomato production has fallen by 27.8% and the cultivated area by 20.6%.

The tomato production volume has gone from 992.67 million kilos in the 2017/2018 campaign to 716.74 million kilos in the 2021/2022 campaign.

In turn, the area dedicated to producing tomatoes in Almeria has declined from 10,311 hectares in the 2017/2018 campaign to 8,187 hectares in the 2021/2022 campaign.

It should be noted that the area has been shrinking season after season in favor of other crops (such as pepper) that have been more profitable than tomato in recent campaigns, as tomato faces strong competition from third countries.

Fortunately, tomato prices haven't followed this decreasing trend. Last season they increased by 34.7% and the average price stood at € 0.97/kg, i.e. 46.97% higher than the € 0.66/kg average price (of all varieties and categories) achieved five years ago in the 2017/2018 campaign.
