It is part of China's Belt and Road Initiative to connect countries through railways that was delayed due to China's strict Covid-19 measures. Now that it has been lifted several carts of the train can be filled with fresh produce for the 55 hour journey.
While Thailand has lots of durians to send to China, Laos sends a limited amount of cassava. The train is about 20% faster than trucks over the same route.
