Verdeflor plans to resume its Hass avocado, grape, asparagus, and pomegranate exports, which it had paused since 2020. This time, unlike years ago, it will export its own products from its fields located in Chao, Trujillo, and Huacho.
“We have 10 hectares cultivated in La Soledad farm (Chao) and 19.50 hectares in San Carlos. The fields are in their second year of harvest and, together, yield nearly 300 tons a year. According to estimates, this production will triple in 2024, which would allow us to have a sufficient volume for export,” stated the manager of the Huaral plant, Antonio Cuadros.
In Huacho the company also has 75 hectares of avocado crops that will be harvested in June and that, according to projections, will yield 150 tons of fruit. Meanwhile, the company is considering getting financing for the exploitation of the La Soledad farm in Chao, where it has a total of 356 hectares available. So far they have 10 hectares planted with avocado, but the company is evaluating the possibility of also planting blueberries on this farm, as it is a very profitable product, he added.
Increased processing and storage capacity
Verdeflor, which has maquila plants in Ica and Huaral, estimates that the processing of Hass avocado for export will grow significantly, from 8 million kilograms processed in 2022 to 12 million this year, as local production is expected to increase by 15% expected this year.
At the same time, the representative said that the company is taking advantage of the installed capacity of its plants with its incursion into the processing of pomegranate, onion, blueberry, and kaki.
Cuadros also said they planned to make investments for more than US$100,000, which will mainly be used to acquire two refrigeration plants, which will allow them to increase their cold storage capacity by 50%.
