It is still a bit too early for shortages in the cabbage market, but nice prices are being made for the time of year, even if they are not as good as onions," says Martin Bolhuis of mediation agency Tuindersbelang from Warmenhuizen, which centrally organises sales for some 60 cabbage growers.
"The amounts are normal. January and February are not the busiest cabbage months, so we certainly cannot complain. Spain is a bit more on the market at the moment and normal volumes are also going to Germany and England. Enquiries are also already being made from Eastern Europe," Martin says.
Prices for white cabbage are now - including straight from the grower - at a level between 35 and 48 cents, with the red at a level between 39 and 45 cents. These are fine prices in themselves, but they were necessary after all the cost increases," Martin stresses. And what the price will do next? "If only I could predict that! But sales-wise, this season shouldn't be such a problem."
