Prices of golden onions are sky high

Stocks of Italian golden onions are very low, 50% lower in February than during the same period in previous years. Availability is low abroad as well. Everybody's looking for them so, of course, prices are skyrocketing.

"What is funny is that, when there is a lot of produce, no one wants it. Now that quantities are low, it seems onions have become essential. I can confirm that I have never seen such high prices," explains operator Davide Marmocchi.

Austria practically halted exports. The Netherlands are exporting, but prices are high. "A trader I usually work with talked about 94 eurocents/kg on February 22nd, 2023."

Marmocchi is privileging his usual clients (mainly big retail chains), those who do not look for immediate speculation but build relationships of mutual trust and are able to understand when to ask for discounts and when it is essential to pay the price required.

Stocks of white and red onions are instead more in line with the period. "I am afraid the produce will lack between the end of imports and the start of the Italian domestic production. I believe the gap will last from 15 to 30 days, but we will see how things will evolve."
