“There are no normal markets anymore,” explains Theo Kampschoer about cauliflowers. “Today, the market is very good because there is a lot of supply, but there could be just half the amount tomorrow or the day after. We cannot plan anything.” This 2023 season has been highly irregular, due to the changing weather.
“The little bit of rain at the end of last week has allowed us to have more merchandise today. But the cold weather has returned and will last for 8 days, with temperatures around 4°C at night. However, cauliflowers need night temperatures above 8°C to grow well. The peak of the season normally occurs in February, but it could be shifted to March or April this year. It is a very particular and unpredictable season.”
The same situation is observed in neighboring countries. “Italy is suffering from the cold, Spain is also experiencing frost. It is difficult everywhere.”
Regarding prices, cauliflowers are mainly sold under yearly contracts, but the market is unstable. “Prices have dropped considerably, from 9.50 € [10.1 USD] per package without packaging or transport last week to 5 € [5.3 USD] today.”
