On Thursday 23 February, the first Dutch asparagus were auctioned at The Greenery, the buyer being Jumbo Supermarkets. Jumbo bought the first crate of 5 kg for the amount of € 5,000, after which The Greenery and its growers doubled the amount to
€10.000. The proceeds will be donated to KWF Kanker-bestrijding.
The asparagus comes from asparagus grower Walter Gubbels from Helvoirt: "The asparagus is a bit earlier than we expected. The asparagus are grown in heated soil and by ensuring a constant temperature, the asparagus grow gradually. As a result, the harvested asparagus are of excellent taste and quality. This gives confidence that we are going to have a great season."
Ton van den Hoek, Lead Category Manager at Jumbo: "We have been receiving Walter Gubbels' asparagus through The Greenery for years and are happy that with this first crate the asparagus season is about to start again. It will still be a few weeks before the asparagus will be available in our shops again, but it does mean that asparagus season is coming."

Next season, the range of asparagus at Jumbo will be expanded to include peeled asparagus under the name Jumbo Fijnproevers. With Jumbo Fijnproevers, Jumbo offers its customers unprocessed, flavourful fresh produce with premium quality.
Increasing volumes for the clock and webshop
Several growers are now starting harvesting and the supply is expected to start gradually next week. Ary van der Waal, clock business manager: "From now on, we will offer Dutch asparagus for the clock and webshop ( https://shop.thegreenery.com/) every day again. We are going to make it a great season!"
