This year's asparagus season is also slowly getting underway in Munich's wholesale market hall. The first batches are now arriving from Greece as well as Italy. "We are holding back on Greece and are now focusing exclusively on Italy in the early sector," says Stefan Bednarek of Früchtewelt Ltd, who was able to market the first batches in week 7. "I only received 24 boxes of green asparagus and 12 boxes of white asparagus today, and they also flowed away immediately. That means there is very little produce available, but the quality of the goods is very nice."

According to the producer, the scarce availability of goods is due to the warm weather during the growing season, Bednarek continues. "You start the season a few days later compared to last year, but it's all still within reason. We hope that the season will now pick up speed and larger quantities will arrive soon." Price-wise, asparagus would be at about the same level as last year, with package prices between 15-18 euros. "We don't expect the first German goods until March 10," Bednarek further said.

Overall, he said, the mood at the local wholesale market in Munich is rather gloomy. "Everyone is unsettled at the moment, both on the supplier and customer side." According to Bednarek, this is also reflected in the market situation. "Due to a lack of demand, special items sometimes cost double what they did two years ago. Avocados, for example, are at an all-time high in terms of price and are sometimes purchased at package prices above 20 euros/carton. As every year, we hope for a positive spring mood, because as we know, with the sun comes the desire to shop."
Gratifying overseas cherry season
At the product level, positive developments can also be observed, the fruit wholesaler continues. "Great quality and equally good prices are currently shaping business with Peruvian Kent mangoes. We also look back on a successful campaign for overseas cherries from Argentina and Chile. There was a continuous supply of low-priced shipping goods and somewhat higher-priced flying goods, so there was something for everyone, which was reflected in an overall high demand." At the moment, however, the overseas cherry season is drawing to a close. "Air-freighted merchandise is already over, the last merchandise shipped in by sea is now in circulation. After that, we are pulling out of the business for the time being."
