In the Netherlands, celeriac sales are slightly behind schedule. Yet Pierre Sweep of A&P Sweep is not concerned.
"Last year's sales were outstanding. Then when they're a little lower, you quickly start wondering why, something we deem unnecessary," he says.
"Prices are quite good with sales prices of around €0.45, so demand's not crazy. Though, there are plenty of inquiries from Eastern Europe. Things could go any way, and the celeriac market is at a tipping point."
"The celeriac's quality is good, and since yields are some 20% lower, supplies are lower," Pierre explains. "Combined with somewhat lower demand, the market is well balanced. Eastern Europe is also again importing a lot of unwashed product this year."
The celeriac specialist is optimistic about the new season too. "Fortunately, the new planting material problems were solved in time and plenty of celeriac plants have been ordered. My compliments to the seed companies, who have many developments with new varieties. There's truly a wide choice this year," Pierre concludes.
