Ever since the ToBRFV problem has become known, people have tried to provide clear information. Many seed companies made many reassuring statements; however, they turned out to be incomplete when the scenarios changed.
Angelle
Syngenta Vegetable Seeds immediately started working on the virus, providing solutions integrated with genetic research. FreshPlaza has talked about it with Bruno Busin (Product Development Specialist Solanaceae).
"Syngenta was the first seed company to introduce ToBRFV-resistant varieties in 2021 after a long search. Five varieties were introduced at the international level (in addition to the 17 currently being tested), and R&D activities continued to find specific solutions at the local level. We immediately applied an integrated approach that includes the development and extension of varietal resistance options, the introduction of various sources of resistance and action mechanisms, and an updating and information center available to the segment."
Seychelle
"Today, we can also present new resistant varieties for Italian productions, and for Sicilian ones more specifically. Those being tested can be observed and tasted in our research station in Acate (RG). Once again, we would like to stress the proximity of Syngenta to Sicilian producers."
"As known, we are leaders in the plum tomato segment with varieties distributed at the global level suitable to harvest as single fruits. Angelle, Seychelle, Sweetelle, and others, so far distributed on the foreign markets and much appreciated for their flavor and LSL, now will have very similar versions with specific genetic resistance to ToBRFV. More in detail: they will maintain their appearance, flavor, and shelf-life, but they will also be resistant."
Sweetelle
Producers, technicians, and operators can get in touch with the technical and sales managers at Syngenta Vegetables Seeds (see contacts below) in Sicily to organize tours of the show-greenhouse and see the new ToBRFV-resistant varieties that will be available as of the next season.
