Destatis press release on February 27, 2023

Vegetable yields down 12% in 2022 compared record year 2021

Roughly 6,100 agricultural holdings in Germany harvested a total of 3.8 million tonnes of vegetables in 2022. Yields were down 12% compared to 2021 and were 2% lower than the average of 2016 to 2021.

Reasons for this decline were the smaller area under cultivation and, among other things, the fact that the summer of 2022 was hot and dry. It has to be taken into account that an all-time high was reached in 2021 when 4.3 million tonnes of vegetables were harvested.

The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the entire area cultivated with vegetables was reduced by 4% to just over 126,400 hectares compared with 2021. The size of the area under vegetables was thus nearly the average of the years 2016 to 2021.
