The high cucumber prices in the food retail sector are causing turmoil among German consumers. Due to the high energy prices, Dutch growers have not all been producing this winter, while the cold snap in Spain has had a noticeable impact on quality and volumes. In Northern Europe, harvesting is being pushed back because "from mid-February onwards, there is so much light that you don't have to use so much energy. The days are now getting longer again, and less gas is needed. The cucumbers are now only slowly coming onto the market. In Germany, too, the harvest is now gradually getting underway," Simon Höfler, a cucumber producer in Nuremberg's Knoblauchsland region, told InFranken.de.
Höfler Gemüse GbR planted its own cucumbers two to three weeks ago. In two to three weeks, these will be harvested. The closer spring gets, the more prices will relax. Höfler suspects: "Prices will probably drop in the next three to four weeks because supply will increase. Tomatoes will remain expensive, in my estimation, and from mid-May on, prices will possibly fall." Tomato production in the Netherlands and Germany will then start in April, he said.
