In the Netherlands, Looije Packing is currently immersed in its grape programs, where these are custom-packaged, mostly loose, in top seals and clamshells. "This season, again, there are big quality differences, but so far, we've managed to always send healthy products out the door," says commercial manager Rene Tunker.
"Aside from the running programs, we're looking ahead to the coming top fruit season. Everyone says you can't compare apples to pears, but in the packaging world, you can. We're expecting considerable volumes of both of these."
"This year, our 'foodtainer' and carton sleeve programs are distinctive," Rene explains. "We're running these programs at multiple locations to meet the large volumes. We also have some smaller programs planned like single-layer packaging and flow packing."
"To start the top fruit season well-prepared, we've given our staff a refresher course. They thus know what to look out for, and we're also trying to work more and more efficiently. A good example is our automated apple-laying system in Rotterdam. Our technical department is currently installing this so we can be ready in time to process all our programs. For optimal storage and transshipment conditions, we work closely with our partners. Then, if need be, we can store the fruits and vegetables longer," Rene concludes.
