Thanks to a sophisticated vertical farming system, Witten-based start-up vGreens can produce strawberries all year round. The plants are grown on just a few square meters, arranged vertically in the racking system, without any sunlight or other external environmental influences. "We have built a completely separate ecosystem here, and we rely on sustainable water management," Claas Ahrens and Maximilian Hartmann, who founded the company just under a year ago, told NRZ.

Through their indoor farm, which can currently produce about 10,000 kilograms of strawberries per year, they want to collect data to provide more solutions for food production in the future, say the strawberry producers. They are already supplying the Frischeparadies in Essen, among others. "We want to set up a large industrial farm," says managing director Ahrens. This should be able to produce 'dozens of tons' of strawberries per year - all automated and with the aid of a harvesting robot.
